The Farm Business Management (FBM) program helps farm families reach their business
and personal financial goals. It focuses on keeping accurate farm records and using
data to make smart decisions. The FBM program helps you boost your farm’s profits
and ensure long-term success. With financial analysis and strategic planning, you
can make better choices that lead to growth, increased efficiency, and a stronger
                  financial position.

                  Program Overview

Our program helps you keep accurate farm records using computerized accounting to
manage your farm’s important information. At the end of the year, you'll work with
your instructor to review your records and create a business analysis to see how your
farm performed financially. You'll also get an Area Farm Business Analysis, which
lets you compare your results with other farmers in the area. To help you succeed,
instructors work closely with farm lenders, Ag Extension staff, and other agriculture
experts, staying up to date on issues that affect farm decisions for the future.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) offers a Farm Business Management scholarship program for beginning farmers. Minnesota
residents who have farmed for less than 10 years can receive scholarships covering
half the cost of FBM education. Eligible participants must have a financial interest
in the farm, be involved in management decisions, and regularly participate in farm
                                       operations.

Scholarships are available through Minnesota State Colleges and Universities or the
Southwest Farm Business Management Association, for up to 40 credits. Over 2,000 Minnesota
farmers participate in FBM each year, improving their business and financial skills.
